Getting Ready

Four days to go and Iā€™m not ready, nor is Johanne. We leave on Thursday 16 August to travel to Dieppe, France. The 19 August is the 70th anniversary of the bloody raid by Canadian soldiers on the quiet, little port and we will be participating in the commemorative ceremonies. We discovered the remarkable affinity the Dieppois have for Canadians during our visit last year (www.relivingtheirjourney.com) and we are looking forward to being amongst them once more. We plan to spend 4 hectic days in Dieppe, a few more in Dunkerque, and then to England to meet family, friends, and conduct research at The National Archives in London on Canadian Prisoners of War, information that is sadly lacking at Veterans Affairs, Library and Archives Canada and the Canadian War Museum. Hope you will follow our journey. All that to say, we still are not ready!

  1. Hi Roddy.
Pleased to see you picked up our link and thanks for your kind offer. My father’s POW number was 26652. He arrived at XIB early April 1945 and remained in the camp until he was liberated by the British 8th Army around 16 April.

    Regards,

    Mike Laekas

    Hi there –

    Interesting trip !

Even more interesting that your Pa ended up in Fallingbostel. I spent eight years posted there in the 1980s and ended up doing considerable research on the camps XIB & 357. If I can help, I would be delighted to do so…when did your father arrive there ? Was he marched out again in April 1945 ?

    Roddy
